speedlight trials

March 05, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

Spent some time with speedlights at college first. Trialled using both slow shutter speed of 1sec to produce a dragged shot with Sylwia leaving a motion blur effect . The flash has frozen her but the long shutter speed has allowed a faint outline blur in front.

This time we changed to the second curtain setting on the flash and got the blur behind as the flash fired after she moved.

The shutter was set to 1 second at f8 to give time for Sylwia to move through the frame.

To change the normal curtain to second curtain is different on various models of camera and flash. Some have this option in the 'menu' of the camera. My Canon 5D with a 580 EX Speedlight has a setting on the speedlight itself.

Only really useful if you want to leave an interesting trail behind a car or pushbike  etc. but great fun.

Painting with light.

These second two were done at home. Michelle was very skilled with the heart and balloon with a bit of practice.

The camera and flash settings are a bit of trial and error. Both were taken using flash for 10 secs at f18 to allow time for Michelle to 'paint'.

The first was 'on camera' and the second 'off camera' to get a different result.

A better background and more practice will produce terrific results and is a great party trick.
